The RI Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities and Hospital's (BHDDH's) long- term prevention planning includes the use of data driven, evidence based practices and evaluation within the infrastructure of a five-year plan.
Based on The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA's) Strategic Prevention Framework, BHDDH and its key stakeholders developed a strategic plan for prevention which incorporates SAMHSA's strategic initiatives as BHDDH's overarching goals and priorities. The plan outlines high priority goals and strategies to strengthen the underlying framework of prevention efforts and provide support, at State and community-levels, for preventing and reducing alcohol and drug abuse in Rhode Island. Since promoting emotional health and wellness, preventing underage drinking and reducing prescription drug misuse and abuse remain the Department's main priorities, they are reflected in the various primary prevention activities conducted by the prevention provider network administered by BHDDH's prevention unit.
